Several Greek Orthodox associations have called on parents to protest sex education in schools, a program that was first introduced by the conservative Ministry of Education following the country’s #MeToo story.
Initiated by a movement called “Μαμά Μπαμπάς και Παιδιά“(Mom, Dad and Children) and the anti-abortion Greek Orthodox Association of Athens, organizers are calling for a protest rally in front of the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs on Monday afternoon, 20 September. Protest slogan:” Sex education is a family matter. ” The organizers of the rally call on “parents to take matters into their own hands” and “to prevent moral and spiritual infection of their children.”
The Mapa, Pope and Children movement, which reportedly aims to highlight, protect and promote the values and ideals of the Greek Orthodox family, calls on parents, teachers and every conscientious citizen of Greece to protest: to prevent such “family and personal problems “were submitted for consideration in the school curriculum.
On the occasion of World Sexual Health Day, Greek Education Minister Niki Kerameos said that “in the shadow of the shocking revelations brought by the #MeToo movement in our country, it has been proven how serious and important it is for children’s health (mental and physical) sex education.” She announced that “this year’s curriculum includes sex education development workshops.” According to the organizers, the seminars are aimed at educating schoolchildren and protecting them from bullying, sexual harassment and violence.
