Greece: area of ​​scorched lands increased by 500%

As a result of 66 major forest fires this year in Greece, the area of ​​the scorched land amounted to about 522,000 hectares.

The report on wildfires in our country this year is tragic: Greece is at the top of the list of the largest burnt-out areas among the Mediterranean countries.

According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), although the number of forest fires in 2021 in the country shows an increase of “only” 43%, compared with the average for the period 2008-2020, the total area of ​​forest burned records an extremely large increase of about 500% relative to the corresponding average for the same period.

In absolute numbers, 66 large forest fires were registered in our country before noon Friday in our country (Figure 1), as a result of which 522,000 hectares were burned (Figure 2, the area is indicated in acres).
