Greek Prime Minister on fire situation today

After receiving the latest information on the progress of the fires in Greece, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced some improvement in the situation.

The Prime Minister visited the Joint Coordination Center for Fire Service Operations today, his press service reported. Mitsotakis was briefed on the ongoing and extinguished fires. It was noted that fighting the fire is much complicated by the 40-degree ten-day heat, to which a strong wind was added yesterday.

The Prime Minister thanked everyone involved in putting out the fire – firefighters, police, volunteers, coast guards. During yet another nightmare night, they made great efforts to control the huge fronts of fire in Attica, Euboea, Ilia and Mani in the Peloponnese. He noted:

“The situation today is a little better than yesterday. We must continue to make every effort to limit all fires and avoid the risk of re-igniting. I want to reiterate my deep sorrow for what happened. Once again, I reassure all those affected that recovery will be mine. a top-priority political task. “

According to the politician, the situation with the power supply of Attica is much better now. Kyriakos Mitsotakis promised to make the restoration of the burnt-down territories his primary political task. He assured that the burned forests will be restored:

“All burned-out areas will be considered reforested … With a lot of effort and, I believe, with the participation of civil society, when this nightmare summer passes, we will focus all our attention on repairing the damage as quickly as possible and restoring our natural environment.”

In connection with the numerous forest fires in Greece, voices are growing louder about the artificial origin of fires, that arson is arranged so that businessmen can get the burned-down territories to build enterprises or hotels on them. The government is accused of not being ready for the fire-hazardous season: traditionally, there is not enough fire-fighting equipment, and the existing equipment is outdated, besides, the fire-fighting infrastructure was not ready.
