The fiery Armageddon in Evia continues, the governor calls for help

The governor of Central Greece Fanis Spanos anxiously asks for air and ground means – the fire in Evia is not going to retreat, capturing new territories.

In the fiery nightmare of Farakla, Limni, Murtia, Kechris, Daphne, Rovies, Metochi, Zoodoho Pigi and Kalivia. During these hours, a battle with fire takes place in Spatari. In addition to the firefighters fighting the flames, there are residents who flatly refuse to leave their homes in accordance with the evacuation order.

Currently, 246 firefighters, 10 ground groups, 66 vehicles, 2 helicopters and an aircraft are fighting with fire. Help is also provided by a hundred firefighters who came to help in the fight against the fire from Ukraine. The coast guard, infantry units of the Greek army, and volunteers are taking part in the extinguishing. Construction equipment is used.

The fiery front is moving in the direction of Kalivia, Trupis, Prokopi. Visibility is minimal due to thick smoke. On the other hand, the site from Kehris, Daphne, Myrtia, Vateri and Limni is endangered until the fire reaches the sea. More than 1300 people in search of salvation from the fire element gathered on the beach and were evacuated by sea to Edipsos.

Further north, in Rovies, a new front of fire moves towards the sea, destroying everything in its path. He took a westerly direction to Edipsos. From the beach of Rovies, 23 people were freed, trapped – they were delivered by coast guard boats to the ship “Captain Aristides”. The convent of Agia Irene was evacuated at night from Chrisovalantos.

The inhabitants of mountain villages are experiencing a real nightmare, in some of them the fire returns several times – in Maruli, Kokkinomilia, Kryoneritis. In its movement, the flames threaten other villages as well, changing direction. The authorities are making unprecedented efforts to save human lives – they are evacuating residents, creating protective zones around settlements.

“People and machines have exceeded their capabilities. The fire does not stop, destroying the forest, houses, threatening lives. We need a SERIOUS amount of air that we have been asking for from day one! And more fire trucks! The fire is not extinguished only with bulldozers! “
