Due to the pandemic, the number of albino killings has increased in the world

The UN reports an increase in the number of killings of people with albinism, which experts associate with the coronavirus pandemic.

Ikponwosa Ero, an independent UN expert on the protection of the rights of persons with albinism, claims the pandemic has led to an increase in the killings of albino people due to their unusual appearance. RIA News… Some people who find themselves in poverty due to the economic crisis due to the coronavirus resort to witchcraft in order to improve their financial situation. The expert states:

“Despite progress in many areas, I have been deeply saddened by the marked increase in reported cases of murders or attacks against people with albinism due to the mistaken belief that using their body parts in potions can bring good luck and wealth. More tragically, most of the victims – children”.

Physical attacks against people with albinism are more common in African countries, but they face stigma around the world. The expert complains that the UN does not have enough information about the real state of affairs in the Asia-Pacific region and Latin America. But there are reports that in China, for example, parents often abandon their albino children.

Reference. Albinism is a rare incurable genetic anomaly associated with the absence of a special enzyme in the body – melanin. Most often, albinism is transmitted genetically. For every 20,000 newborns worldwide, there is 1 albino. For some ethnic groups, this figure is much higher.
