23 leaders from around the world, including Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Emanuel Macron, Angela Merkel and Boris Johnson, are working with the heads of the European Council and the World Health Organization to develop an international treaty that will help the planet cope with future health crises like this one. pandemic coronavirus.
The 23’s Initiative is moving towards coordinated action in the face of future health problems, as well as strengthening international cooperation at a time when the coronavirus vaccine issue is causing controversy around the world.
Among other things, the letter says:
“There will be other pandemics and other serious health emergencies. No government or multilateral organization can confront this threat alone. The question is not if, but when. Together, we must be better prepared for the coordinated forecasting, prevention and effective detection of pandemics. The coronavirus pandemic has become a strong and painful reminder that no one is safe until everyone is safe.
Therefore, we are committed to ensuring global and equitable access to safe, effective and affordable vaccines, medicines and competitive procedures for current and future pandemics. Immunization is a global good and we must be able to develop and produce vaccines as soon as possible.
The main goal of this treaty is to promote a comprehensive government and social approach to strengthening national, local and global resilience to future pandemics. This includes significantly strengthening international cooperation to improve, for example, warning systems, data exchange, research, and local, regional and global production and distribution of medical supplies and public health measures such as vaccines, medicines, diagnostic procedures and personal care products. protection.
This should also include the recognition of the One Health approach, which links the health of people, animals and our planet as a whole. “And such a treaty should lead to greater mutual accountability and shared responsibility, transparency and cooperation within the international system, with its rules and laws.”
