The miraculous snakes of the Virgin Mary appeared in Kefalonia

Literally two days before the great Orthodox feast of the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos, miraculous snakes reappeared on the island of Kefalonia.

In a conversation with ERT, the pastor of the Holy Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Markopoulo (Kefalonia Island), Father Petros Andreatos announced that this year the church was “visited” three snakes quite large, which bodes well.

According to the priest, snakes “with a cross on their heads and tongues soft as silk” (warm-blooded) have appeared in the church every year since 1200, when pirates attacked the island, and the monks and nuns asked for help from the face of the Virgin Mary (εικόνα της Παναγίας ).

As passed from that time from mouth to mouth, the image of the Most Holy Theotokos appeared before the priests, who told them that they should not be afraid, because she would protect them. Suddenly, thousands of snakes attacked the pirates and drove them off the island.

According to the priest, the snakes did not appear at all:

during two world wars; in 1953, when the island was destroyed by a strong earthquake; in 1974, when the Turkish invasion of Cyprus took place; in 1985-1986, when there was a nuclear explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant; in 2005, when the Ilios plane crashed, and Greece mourned 121 victims.

According to the cleric, in 2013, when a strong earthquake struck Kefalonia, only one snake appeared in the church, and in 2020, when the Covid pandemic began, only two small snakes appeared.
