The measure is being introduced to fill 12 vacant doctor positions on the island.
A significant shortage of medical services and doctors forced city authorities to take emergency measures. In addition to salaries and what is required by law, since the island is a border area, the municipality subsidizes the positions with a significant amount.
Mayor Angelos Tsirigotakis explains that of the approximately 12 positions that should be available, there is only one doctor. Thus, it was concluded that resident doctors should be paid a monthly allowance of 700 euros, and rural doctors – 400 euros. The authorities also undertake to help find housing for those who decide to settle on the island.
