In Thessaly, suffering from the consequences of flooding, a 57-year-old man died of leptospirosis.
He became infected in the first days floods and was hospitalized in the intensive care unit. Two more patients with leptospirosis are also in the hospital. One of them is in serious condition and was placed in the intensive care unit. reports newsbeast.gr.
Leptospirosis is an acute infectious disease caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira. The main points of “impact” are muscles, central nervous system, capillaries, kidneys and liver. Most pathogens are found in swampy areas and very humid regions. Typically, the infection enters the body through mucous membranes, wounds, the gastrointestinal tract and the genitourinary system – it comes from contaminated water, food, and soil.
The causative agent of leptospirosis is most often transmitted by rodents, pigs, horses, dogs, as well as representatives of cattle. Among animals, mortality from this disease can reach 90%. A sick person requires immediate hospitalization.
