The Peloponnese was in 2022 one of the last positions of the European Union regions in terms of the number of passenger cars per inhabitant, according to data published by Eurostat.
In 2022 in EU There were, on average, 0.56 passenger cars per resident – the same as in 2021. This figure masks significant regional differences: from 2.34 in Valle d'Aosta (Italy) to 0.08 in Mayotte (France).
Regional motorization rates (the number of passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants) are often linked to economic conditions, but they can also be influenced by specific conditions. For example, the record rate of Valle d'Aosta was influenced by taxation.
In 2022, the top three with the highest level of motorization were Italy: Valle d'Aosta with 2,339 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by the Autonomous Province of Trento with 1,431 cars per 1,000 inhabitants and the Autonomous Province of Bolzano with 935 cars per 1 000 inhabitants.
Among the 10 regions with the highest levels of car use are six in Italy and one each in Finland, Greece, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic.
At the other end of the scale is the French region of Mayotte (83 cars per 1,000 inhabitants), which follows the Greek Peloponnese (203 per 1,000 inhabitants) and French Guiana (217 per 1,000 inhabitants).
Among the EU regions with the highest share of passenger electric vehicles (among all vehicles), the regions of the Netherlands and Sweden stand out. The highest proportions were recorded in Flevoland (12.8%) and Utrecht (6.6%) in the Netherlands, and Stockholm (6.6%) in Sweden. The top ten included 4 regions in the Netherlands, 4 in Sweden, 1 in Luxembourg and 1 in Austria. In terms of the number of electric vehicles, close to zero:
