4306 people renounced Russian citizenship last year

According to diplomatic missions and consular offices of Russia abroad, in 2022, 4,306 people renounced Russian citizenship, the vast majority (with the exception of 40 citizens, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation) while abroad at that time.

How writes Air Force, in 2020, 3877 people refused Russian citizenship, in 2021 – 4055. But in 2019 there were more than in 2022: 4356 refusals.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia “does not observe” any significant changes in the dynamics of the number of applications and recalls that in 2020-2021, the reception of visitors in Russian foreign institutions was carried out in a limited mode due to the coronavirus pandemic:

“Taking into account the fact that in 2020-2021, due to sanitary and epidemiological requirements, the reception of visitors in Russian institutions abroad was carried out in a limited mode, there are no significant changes in the dynamics of the number of applications for registration of renunciation of Russian citizenship abroad.”

At the end of January, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation reported that only 40 people had renounced Russian citizenship in the country. The ministry did not specify how many such statements were made a year earlier.

In mid-January, the Russian embassy in Estonia announced the suspension of accepting applications from Russians for renunciation of citizenship. The diplomatic mission cited a more than fourfold reduction in the number of consular employees at the request of the Estonian authorities as the reason. However, since February 6, the embassy announced the resumption of accepting applications for renunciation of Russian citizenship.

Citizens of the Russian Federation may renounce citizenship if they do not have unfulfilled obligations to the state. The list of such includes unpaid taxes, criminal cases, evasion of military duty, notes TASS.

In 2022, the BBC recalls, well-known businessmen Oleg Tinkov, Yuri Milner, Nikolai Storonsky and Ruben Vardanyan renounced Russian citizenship.
