The number of asylum applications in the European Union has almost halved

Among the increased number of asylum applications in EU most of them are registered in Germany, and every third applicant for status in this country is from Syria.

As notes dw, 923,991 asylum applications were registered in 27 EU countries last year, i.e. 46.5% more than in 2021. The German weekly Welt am Sonntag published data on the status of migration and refugees on Sunday, citing a confidential EC document. This is an ad hoc report based on as yet unreleased data from the European Asylum Agency on 4 January.

It follows from the document that in 2022, Germany received 226,467 applications for refugee status – the highest number since 2016 – and by a wide margin leads among the countries of the European Union. In second place is France (154,597), followed by Spain (116,952) and Austria (108,490). The last three are Latvia (622), Slovakia (544) and Hungary (46).

Approximately 30% of asylum seekers in Germany are Syrian citizens, followed by refugees from Afghanistan (17%), Turkey (10%) and Iraq (6.7%).

Ukrainian refugees are not included in these statistics, as they automatically receive the right to temporary residence and social benefits in the EU.
