Unemployment benefit: what will change from 2023 for recipients

Unemployment benefit will be converted into a “work allowance”, that is, it will be paid at a rate of 50% to everyone who voluntarily stops receiving a subsidy from the state and finds a job.

At the beginning of 2023, a change in the calculation of unemployment benefits will come into force, for which, according to the latest data from the State Employment Service (Δημόσιας Υπηρεσίας Απασχόλησης, formerly ΟΑΕΔ), are entitled to about 150,000 registered in the register.

In fact, this is the transformation of unemployment benefits into a “work allowance”, that is, the state will pay benefits in the amount of 50% (of unemployment benefits) in addition to the salary, i.e. if a person finds a job earlier – during the period when he still receives benefits from ΟΑΕΔ.

Recall that usually in Greece the unspoken system is as follows – if an unemployed person receives benefits, then he receives it for a year. And even if he finds a job during this period, he works illegally, preferring to “take everything that is due” to him from the state, and only then find a job.

Regulation is provided for in the law “Δουλειές Ξανά”, which adopted in April but never implementedbecause no relevant ministerial decision has been issued. According to the competent officials of the Ministry of Labor, the law will come into force from the beginning of 2023, and thus the implementation of the regulation in question (the introduction of “work allowance”) will occur immediately after that.
