The couple experienced incredible hardships, as no hotel accepted them with their pet.
It was not one, not two, not three, but six consecutive hotel check-outs that the couple received because their dog was with them. As a result, two sightseers from Thessaloniki spent the night in the port of Piraeus.
Chronicle of their “Odyssey”
The couple arrived in Athens at 2 pm on Friday with their dog to board the ferry to Crete on Saturday evening. They began to look for a hotel, but when they reported that they had a dog with them, they received a categorical refusal.
“We entered the hotel and were told that the dog is not allowed, because the manager forbids it. Others told us that the law forbids it. We visited a total of six hotels. I couldn’t even get on the subway as some people told me it was not allowed or only allowed if the animal was in a carrier. Therefore, we were forced to stay in the port all night to sail to Crete tonight,” the couple said in a statement.
“What can you do… We’ll wait here the rest of the time until we get on the ship. Because we no longer have the strength to look for a room even somewhere nearby. And the dog suffers, and so do we. We spent the whole day looking for an inn, moving around in the heat on foot,” says the wife with a clear print of fatigue on her face.
What does the law say about this?
It should be noted that the law does not state that animals are not allowed in hotels, but this is regulated by the policy of each of them. There are hotels in Greece that accept pets, but each has its own rules. Usually your dog can stay at the hotel at no extra charge, however there are times when it is required.
Some hotels have special rooms that do not have, for example, carpets or rugs, and are recommended for people traveling with their pets. In other hotels, they simply provide a room “on the outskirts” (so that the dog does not disturb the rest of the hotel customers with its barking).
