Athens in August turns into a racing “track”, as many drivers take the opportunity to rush “with the breeze” through the deserted streets of the metropolis.
According to an ERT report, more drivers want to “treat themselves with adrenaline” by taking advantage of the deserted streets of the capital. Video cameras of the traffic police recorded cars passing under the bridge at a speed of 160 and 161 km/h.
Mostly in the evening hours and especially on central roads, many drivers significantly exceed the speed limit, but do not stop there, writes iefimerida.gr.
Spontaneous races (“κόντρες”), speed competitions, are arranged between drivers, which puts the traffic police on alert. As August 15 approaches, this phenomenon is expected to intensify, as Athens will be empty at this time due to the mass departure of the townspeople.
Police have set up roadblocks at key points to stop would-be criminals before they endanger not only their own lives, but other road users as well as pedestrians.
