Remains of an unknown ship found off the island of Kythnos

An unknown shipwreck has been discovered west of the island of Kythnos in the western Cyclades, 56 nautical miles from Attica. There are indications that the ship sank after an explosion at the bow.

There is no indication of its date yet. Researcher Kostas Toktaridis told state news agency amna that the wreck was found at a depth of 110 meters and its stern also collapsed.

Its bow faces north, and widely scattered debris was found 30 meters from the stern. According to him, metal parts of the ship and the deck were thrown out of the wreckage, and the damage indicates that the ship sank very quickly.

After inspecting the wreckage using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), the length of the ship was estimated at almost 40 meters, and its profile height is a maximum of 3 meters. An additional unique design factor is that the frame lines are very close together.

“The overall picture and the unique design of the wreck — no holds — point to a very old ship, possibly a military one,” Toktaridis said.

He added that he hoped historical research would help identify the ship. Experts suggest that the ship may have been sunk during the First World War.
