A new “explosion” of prices for bread, milk and cheese

In the dairy industry, due to a large increase in prices (up to 35%) for some products, sales dropped sharply (by 9% -11%).

Prices for essential goods have risen in recent months. Consumers have experienced different prices on supermarket shelves even for several days. A nightmare situation is developing for the townspeople, who are no longer able to fill the “food basket” with even the most necessary. The rise in prices, according to the market, has so far fluctuated on average from 7% to 8%, in some cases reaching or even exceeding 30%.

Inflation has eaten a hole in the pockets of predominantly unprotected households and middle-class citizens who, after “inflated” electricity bills, clutched their heads. In the first half of the year, 60% to 70% of the monthly income (up to 1100 euros) was spent on food and energy costs only.

The situation in supermarkets

At the top of the price rise list are dairy products. For some items, prices have increased by 35% in recent months, which has a strong impact on consumption. During the first four months of the year, the decline in sales of yellow cheeses reached 9%, white cheeses – 10-11%. Since May 2021, inflation has risen from 0.1% to 10.2% last month and is expected to top 11.5% next Thursday, according to ΕΛ.ΣΤΑΤ. This large increase has resulted in an additional cost of between 130 and 200 euros per month for a family of four just for food and basic necessities.

Price comparison (from last May to today):

• a chicken that used to cost €3 is now sold for €4.30;
• a kilogram of feta, from 8 euros last May, now costs 10.80 euros;
• tomatoes last year cost 1.20 euros, and today they are sold at prices ranging from 1.70 to 2.50 euros;
• a loaf of bread (bun) has risen in price from 0.60 euros to 1.20 euros.

Bakers, however, do not rule out a new increase in the price of bread, by another 10-12%.
