Putin delivered a speech on Red Square

Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a speech at the parade of the Russian armed forces in honor of Victory Day on Red Square.

He congratulated all Russians on the holiday, honored the memory of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War, explained why the military operation in the Donbass is taking place. In his address, the President addressed all citizens of Russia:

“Dear citizens of Russia, dear veterans, comrade soldiers and sailors, sergeants and foremen, midshipmen and ensigns, comrade officers, generals and admirals, I congratulate you on the Great Victory Day. The defense of the Motherland, when its fate was being decided, has always been sacred.”

Vladimir Putin noted the peculiarity of today’s holiday:

“May 9, 1945 is forever inscribed in world history as a triumph of our united Soviet people, their unity and spiritual power, an unparalleled feat at the front and in the rear. Victory Day is close and dear to each of us, in Russia there is no family that would not be scorched The Great Patriotic War. The memory of it does not fade.”

The head of Russia noted the patriotism of the participants in military events both in the past and at the present time:

“With such feelings of genuine patriotism, the militia of Minin and Pozharsky rose for the fatherland, went on the attack on the Borodino field, fought the enemy near Moscow and Leningrad, Kyiv and Minsk, Stalingrad and Kursk, Sevastopol and Kharkov. So now these days you are fighting for our people in the Donbass, for the security of our homeland Russia.<...> I am now addressing our Armed Forces and the militia of Donbass.You are fighting for the Motherland, for its future, so that no one forgets the lessons of World War II, so that in the world there was no place for executioners, punishers and Nazis.”

According to Putin, despite all the disagreements in international relations, Moscow “always stood for the creation of a system of equal and indivisible security”, offered Western countries an agreement on security guarantees, but was not heard:

“The NATO countries did not want to hear us, which means that in fact they had completely different plans, and we saw it. Openly, preparations were underway for another punitive operation in the Donbass, an invasion of our historical lands, including Crimea.”

The President urged to remember how in Kyiv they announced the possible acquisition of nuclear weapons, which is unacceptable for Russia, quotes RIA News:

“We saw how the military infrastructure was unfolding, how hundreds of foreign advisers began to work, there were regular deliveries of the most modern weapons from NATO countries. The danger grew every day. Russia gave a preemptive rebuff to aggression – this was a forced, timely and only right decision, , a strong and independent country”.

Donbass militias are fighting on their own land, Putin said. The North Atlantic Alliance “began active military development of the territories adjacent to us”:

“In this way, an absolutely unacceptable threat for us was systematically created, moreover, directly at our borders. Everything indicated that a clash with neo-Nazis, Bandera, on whom the United States and younger partners staked, would be inevitable.”

Before the start of the military operation on February 24, Putin, addressing the Russians, recalled the pages of history associated with the Great Patriotic War. At that time, the USSR tried to prevent or at least delay the outbreak of war, “strived literally to the last not to provoke a potential aggressor, did not carry out or postponed the most necessary, obvious actions to prepare to repel an inevitable attack,” and this led to the fact that the actions taken in the end “We are already disastrously late. We will not allow such a mistake a second time, we have no right.”
