Austria intends to pay Russia for gas in rubles

Austrian energy group OMV, one of the largest importers of Russian gas, is preparing to open ruble accounts with Gazprombank in Switzerland, the Financial Times reported today, citing sources.

Russian energy giant Gazprom announced on Wednesday 27.04 Poland and Bulgaria, which will stop gas supplies to them after they failed to respond to Moscow’s request to pay in rubles, thereby exacerbating the dispute with Western countries opposed to the Russian invasion, reports dikaiologitika.gr.

The Austrian government responded on Wednesday that Russian gas supplies to the country continue without restrictions and that there is no sign that this will change, while seeking alternative sources of supply.

According to the Financial Times, Italy’s Eni, another of Gazprom’s largest clients, is considering its options. The Italian company has until the end of May, when it will make another payment for Russian supplies, to take the last step, the newspaper reported, citing Italian officials.

An OMV spokesman told Reuters that the company is working on a solution that would be compatible with the sanctions. The German company Uniper is going to transfer its gas payments to a Russian bank and will no longer use a European bank, the Rheinische Post reported.
