Turkey develops ANKA drone with sea mine detection system

The Turkish industry has risen to a new level after the development of ANKA drones equipped with a sea mine detection system in the Black Sea.

The head of the Turkish defense industry, Ismail Demir, said that the drone will detect mines, which will be cleared by the Turkish Navy’s emergency teams. At the moment the Turks discovered three in the Black Sea naval mines.

The Black Sea, washing Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia, Turkey and, of course, Ukraine and Russia, has been the scene of hostilities since February 24. Russia and Ukraine mutually accuse each other of planting naval mines in the Black Sea.

TAI ANKA – a family of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) developed by the Turkish company Türk Havacılık ve Uzay Sanayii (TUSAŞ) for the Turkish armed forces. He’s not as famous as Bayraktar TB2and belongs to another class of drones.

Work on the creation of Anka has been going on since 2004. He made his first flight in 2010. TUSAŞ said that two modifications of the drone are being developed – Anka-A and Anka-B. The first is intended for observation, patrolling, reconnaissance. Anka-B strike drone armed with missiles and air bombs. In the fall of 2013, the Turkish military ordered 10 Anka-A UAVs, in 2017 10 ANKA-S (armed version) with delivery in 2018[5]. In 2019, the Turkish Air Force signed a contract for another 22 drones of various modifications. In 2019, a test flight was made of a more powerful version of the drone – TAI Aksungur, with 2 engines and a payload increased to 700 kg.

The multi-purpose UAV is made mostly of composite materials. The tail is V-shaped (at an angle of 100º). Three-bladed propeller. Retractable tricycle landing gear.

Military application

The UAV was used by Turkey during Operation Spring Shield in Syria. On February 25, 2020, the Turkish ANKA-S UAV was shot down in Syria in the province of Idlib, near the city of Sarakib, by the Syrian army. On March 1, 2020, another Turkish ANKA-S UAV was shot down in Syria near Serakib.

Nevertheless, the combat use of Turkish UAVs in Syria was quite successful. According to Turkey, as a result of the operation, including with the help of TAI Anka, Bayraktar, 23 tanks, 23 artillery installations, 10 infantry fighting vehicles, 5 helicopters, several Pantsir air defense systems, 309 Syrian military were destroyed.
