Today, January 30, a roll call vote will be held in the Greek Parliament on the issue of no confidence in the government, submitted for consideration by the leading opposition party SYRIZA. Should we expect surprises?
Consideration of the vote of no confidence will last three days, starting on Friday, and will end late Sunday evening, AMNA news agency reported. SYRIZA – The Progressive Alliance criticizes the current cabinet for inefficiency in ensuring the proper functioning of the public health system and counterproductive economic policies that have led to rising prices in the country. During the plenary session of Parliament, the head of SYRIZA-PA, Alexis Tsipras, the former prime minister, stated:
“I can’t take it anymore. My opinion and the opinion of the majority of citizens is that this government should go as soon as possible. It’s time for you to leave, because democracy cannot be in a deadlock.”
The official representative of the Greek government, Ioannis Ikonomou, in turn, noted that the debates taking place in parliament over the vote of no confidence in the cabinet of ministers give the people of Greece an exceptional opportunity to hear about the results of the work of the ruling New Democracy:
“We have successes and shortcomings. We have the courage to say what went wrong and try to fix it.”
An absolute majority of 151 votes is required to pass a vote of no confidence in the cabinet in the 300-seat unicameral parliament. New Democracy has 157 seats, so the result of the vote is clear and no surprises are expected. Political observers note that opposition parties expect to make additional criticism of the current government during parliamentary debates and increase their own popularity ratings among the population.
