Greek households under pressure from inflation

The Hellenic Union of Consumer Workers (EEKE) is sounding the alarm about the sharp rise in the prices of goods and services, as the increase in prices impoverishes the people.

As EEKE notes, “society, consumers, the world of work are watching a new increase in inflation in our country, which reached 5.1% in December from 4.8% in November, which leads to a fall in prices for most goods and services.”

According to the Hellenic Statistical Office (ELSTAT) for December last year, the prices went up:

19.7% lamb and goat meat, 14.2% potatoes, 7.6% pasta, 6.6% poultry and semi-finished products, 6.7% fresh fish, 4.9% bakery products.

On the other hand, the basic needs of the average household are met with great difficulty, since the rise in prices in December simply went through the roof:

45% for electricity, 135.7% for natural gas, 34.1% for fuel oil, 21.7% for fuels and lubricants, etc.

The Union of Consumer Workers of Greece speaks of the desperation of citizens who restrict themselves in everything, even in food and heating their homes, especially now, in the middle of winter.

Referring to the numerous appeals to them from people about the frenzied price increase, and the lack of action by the state, EEKE calls on the government to take immediate measures to regulate the situation and provide increased assistance and support to vulnerable segments of the population.
