The American Ambassador to Greece Jeffrey Pyatt on Friday announced the launch of the DisinfoHacks project to combat disinformation and fake news, which was launched by the State Department.
The speech of the US Ambassador to the Hellenic Republic was published on the embassy’s website. At the presentation of the project, Payette said that its funding was provided by the State Department’s Global Engagement Center (GEC). The US Ambassador noted:
“We believe that well-informed citizens are the key to the functioning of our democratic institutions. Disinformation has become one of the greatest challenges our democracies face. I am very proud that we have been able to create a successful GEC program here in Greece.”
Jeffrey Pyatt named the embassy’s partners in the project: professor from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Nikos Panayiota, president of the University’s Digital Communication Network Global Hub; Betty Tsakarestou, professor from the Athens University of Political and Social Sciences Pantheon; Vasilisa Tsulisa from Youth Entrepreneurship Technology in Thessaloniki. Significant support for the project, according to Greek Reporter, provided by the non-profit organizations Found.ation and SocialInnov. The head of the diplomatic mission noted:
“The presentation of the project marks the culmination of many months of planning and coordination from the partners. I have to give them credit. They responded to our call for new approaches to combating disinformation in Greece.”
