Right click and save. The four worst words for victims of revenge porn. A phrase that sums up the horror in which they live.
Even if the attacker or the authorities remove the material in question from the websites that published it first, no one knows how many other pornographic sites have borrowed it, how many prying eyes have watched it, how many computers it has been downloaded to, how many users have saved it among their files. and at what point he will return to the Internet again, turning the victim’s torment into eternity. Right click and save.
Even the term “revenge porn“Disorientates and acts in the collective subconscious, as if the victims belong to the LGBTQ community. On the one hand, this means that everything was preceded by the reprehensible behavior of the victim, and on the other hand, this applies to the pornography industry, where shooting and projection are made with the knowledge of the participants. The most correct term, according to experts, is “distribution of sexual material without consent.” The material – photographs or videos of a sexually explicit nature – could have been obtained either through illegal recording or hacking, or with consent in the context of the novel. However, like in the case of Statis Panagiotopoulos (former host of Radio Arvila) as an alleged criminal, occupying public attention since the day before yesterday, when the dissemination of confidential personal material is carried out without the consent of the person who appears in it. In fact, revenge (usually after separation) is not the only reason for this practice. Many people publish such content for the sake of experience (usually young people, a phenomenon strong in schools), for financial gain or “simply” because of the distorted perception of the role of power that some men prefer in relation to women.
The pandemic appears to have further rekindled this phenomenon. In Greece, 13 cases were reported in 2021. In Britain, the number of related complaints increased by 22% during the blocking period.
However, the cases that become known are only the tip of the iceberg. This is because in most cases, victims are reluctant to report their cyberbullying for fear of further problems. As with all crimes of sexual violence, victims are often accused of “revenge porn” instead of the perpetrators. “Why did he take this photo?”, “He didn’t know what would happen?”, “He wanted this, and he suffered.” Characteristic happeningwhen the victim was a 14-year-old schoolgirl who posted a nude photo of herself via Snapchat, believing it would be automatically deleted. When he “downloaded” it and sent it to his friends, as a result of which it eventually leaked on the Internet, the girl began to receive hundreds of abusive messages, as a result of which the family was forced to change their place of residence.
Threats
The pressure on the victims is often unbearable. In February 2016, residents of Greece were shocked by the tragic story of a 22-year-old student who threw herself from the 9th floor of AUTh’s dormitory. Her family claimed that the girl received threats by publishing her personal videos and photos. Evidence that she was threatened with a leaked video also came to light in the highly publicized case of the rape and murder of Eleni Topaludi in Rhodes in 2018.
Another reason why the victims refuse to speak to the authorities is that the trial lasts for years, and during this time the victims are subjected to unbearable pressure. While other countries such as Germany, France and England have adopted special provisions criminalizing the inadvertent disclosure of audiovisual material with sexual (nude or semi-nude) content, in Greece it is prosecuted as a violation of personal data law. The punishment under this article is less severe if other crimes were committed, such as extortion, threats, violence.
However, the pandemic appears to have further rekindled the phenomenon. In Greece, the cybercrime prosecutor’s office registered 13 cases in 2021, while in Britain the number of related complaints increased by 22% during the isolation period.
In Greece, complaints about such phenomena can be filed with the Cybercrime Prosecutor’s Office by calling 11188, as well as the 24/7 support line of the General Secretariat for Family Policy and Gender Equality (15900).
