According to the readers of Time magazine (USA), Jair Bolsonaro, President of Brazil, became the man of the year, leaving behind scientists and medical professionals who have been fighting on the front lines of the pandemic for 2 years.
As reported on the website of the publication, readers had to choose a person (a group of people) who had the most positive or negative impact on the course of events in the past year. The Brazilian president scored 24% of the 9 million survey participants to take the lead.
Bolsonaro has been harshly criticized many times for his approach to combating the pandemic, both from the international community and from Brazilian politicians. Acting contrary to medical advice, he offered inadequate treatment for the coronavirus. In October, his YouTube account was blocked for spreading fakes about the pandemic.
In second place after the Brazilian was the American president, although the former is Donald Trump. He got 9% of the readers’ votes. The third place was taken by doctors who are at the forefront of the fight against coronavirus (6.3%). In fourth place is the anti-corruption Russian activist Alexei Navalny, who is currently in prison (6%). And only the fifth place was earned by scientists who developed vital vaccines against COVID-19, earning 5.3% of the vote.
