Court in the Mati case: “10 euros a day is the price of the lives of our children”

After the “merciful” court decision in the case of the deadly fire in Mati, when most of the accused were acquitted and six “punished” were released, Katerina Malla, a survivor of the tragedy, commented on this event, emphasizing that the same thing would happen with the disaster in Tempi.

Speaking to SKAI, Ms Malla noted that the decision is a harbinger of the Tempi case and called on the victims' relatives to realize “that there is only one game.”

“The same will happen with the Tempi case. And let the relatives of the Tempi victims wake up and understand that there is only one game, this case will end in the same way. It's as if it happened yesterday and we are killing our people again. The first game was played on a chessboard in Tempi because it is all one game. The punishment for a crime should not be “ridiculous”. They don't respect anyone,” she said. And noted: “We feel insulted, angry.”

She said: “The court “whitewashed” the criminals because they were afraid that we would beat them. MWe can't believe what we heard.”

When asked what she expected from today's meeting, she replied that she wanted to get a decision that would make tomorrow safer for children, so that no new tragedy would occur.

“I expected that my children would survive this and that something would be done to make tomorrow a little safer. If everything had been done faster, Tempi would not have happened. And today we did nothing that would prevent allow the next tragedy to happen. We condemned only the perpetrators of this crime,” – Ms. Malla complains.

In conclusion, speaking about the punishment of the perpetrators, she noted that “10 euros a day is the price of our children's lives*”, and asked her parents to take care of them. “Take care of your children, they are not safe”.

*10 euros per day – this is a “payoff” measure for 6 convicts so that they do not go to prison. This measure was first applied in Greece in such a resonant matter regarding those responsible for the mass death of the country's citizens.

The decision shocked the Greek population.
