Moderna CEO Stephen Bansell predicts that current coronavirus vaccines are unlikely to be effective against the Omicron mutation:
“I don’t think it’s as effective as with the Delta mutation. I believe that there will be a significant decrease in efficiency. I just don’t know how much, because we need to wait for the data. But all the scientists I spoke with said that this is most likely the case. “
Bunsell noted that the large number of Omicron mutations in the spike protein the virus uses to infect human cells, and the rapid spread of the variant in South Africa, strongly suggests that existing vaccines will need to be modified.
