Coronavirus: good and bad news from an expert

“For the first time in a long time, the spread of coronavirus in Greece fell to 5%,” said Nikos Tsanakis.

As you know, the spread rate of coronavirus (Rt) shows how many people, on average, have time to infect one infected person before they are isolated.

Speaking to SKAI, a professor of pulmonology at the University of Crete said: “We are in a recession stage of the pandemic, just before it ends, although it will take some time in total. A lot of tests have been done this week. For example, yesterday it was 58,000, and for the first time in a very long time we had the lowest RT index (5%), which is very important. I remind you that 4% is the ECDC alarm limit to characterize an area as a red zone, ”said the specialist.

9,500 deaths at the end of April
However, Mr. Tsanakis made an ominous prediction for the number of deaths, estimating that the total will reach 9,500 by the end of the month, while emphasizing that there are concerns about the congestion of the healthcare system. “There has been a slight increase in intensive care units in the last 2-3 days,” he said.

Commenting on the opening of the lyceums on Monday, a professor at the University of Crete calculated that if parents and children demonstrate high adherence to instructions and conduct self-tests twice a week, the opening of lyceums will have little effect on the course of the pandemic.

On the retail side, Mr Tsanakis stressed that the current focus is on consumer compliance. “We don’t go to the store when we’re sick; we wear a mask and, if possible, double; we are disciplined in what the shopkeepers tell us. Trade employees take tests every week. Everything can go smoothly and the economy can start to revive. The most important thing is psychological relaxation of the consumer, ”the professor emphasized.

Mr. Tsanakis is a proponent of inter-municipal travel during Easter, stressing that “it is better to send people to their villages and spend time outdoors on Easter than to leave them in houses in large urban centers or allow them to gather in groups in apartments.”

Commenting on the vaccination course, the expert noted that by the end of April “we will reach 3 million vaccinated, that is, about 30%, of which 18-20% will receive both doses.”
