On Sunday, October 17, two women tried to hang a poster on the Acropolis to protest the upcoming Beijing Winter Olympics.
According to the New York organization Students for Free Tibet, the activists were detained by the Greek police. The group said that Tsela Zoksang, an 18-year-old Tibetan student, and Joey Siu, a 22-year-old Hong Kong activist in exile, are US citizens and are members of the No Beijing 2022 campaign.
Two women and their accomplice entered the archaeological site officially, as tourists, paying a ticket. Once on the territory of the Parthenon, the activists climbed the scaffolding and tried to place a banner there.
The guard hurried to them and took down the banner. Nevertheless, the women remained on the scaffolding and planted the Tibetan flag and a smaller banner there, proclaiming the “Free Revolution in Hong Kong” (“Ελεύθερη Επανάσταση στο Χονγκ Κονγκ”). The movement’s activists chanted slogans such as “Free Tibet”, “Boycott Beijing in 2022” and “No freedom, no games.” Meanwhile, the police arrived at the scene and arrested the women.
Recall that the Olympic flame of the XXIV Winter Games will be lit on Monday in Ancient Olympia and handed over to the Chinese at a ceremony at the Panathinaikos stadium on Tuesday.
The Winter Games in Beijing will be held from 4 to 20 February 2022, and the Paralympic Games will be held from 4 to 13 March.
