Dangerous masks and fake coronavirus tests were sold by criminals. Profit amounted to more than 1.6 million euros

A major operation by Greek law enforcement authorities, which took place at noon on Wednesday 22 May, led to the arrest of two foreigners who intended to sell 2,500,000 masks and 351,000 coronavirus tests, which, according to the National Medicines Agency (NEMO), are dangerous to health .

Arrested, as stated in the report EL.AS, stored medical masks and covid tests (self test) in the house and in a warehouse in the center of Athens and in Aspropyrgos. As it became known, the attackers changed the production date and expiration date on the product and sent it to the market.

According to the police, one of the detainees used a transport company based in Aspropyrgos as a storage location, where he sent more than four containers containing self-diagnosis tests and medical protective masks for safekeeping since July 2023. Boxes of masks have been stored there since 2021.

According to the National Medicines Agency, changes in production and expiration dates, as well as conditions of storage, transportation and handling of products make medical masks and coronavirus tests dangerous to public health. The illicit financial benefit that criminals would have received from the sale of confiscated tests and protective masks is estimated to exceed €1,601,000.

During the searches the following was discovered and seized:

  • 351,000 self-diagnostic tests for Covid,
  • 2,500,000 medical protective masks,
  • 120,000 sticker labels from a foreign pharmaceutical company,
  • 5.7 grams of crystal methamphetamine,
  • 2 mobile phones,
  • Printer,
  • laptop,
  • vehicle
  • a large number of boxes with labels.

Those arrested were taken to the competent prosecutor's office.
