Attica was empty on Easter: residents rushed "out of town"

The Greeks will traditionally hold Easter in the countryside or on the wonderful Greek islands. And this desire was not affected either by high prices for fuel for cars, or by rising prices for ferries, trains and intercity buses, and even airplanes.

This year the wave of departures began on Holy Wednesday, and gained momentum every day. There was a high load on ferries, planes and KTEL buses. In particular, the occupancy rate of buses in ΚΤΕΛ Kifissos and Lyossia reaches 100% since yesterday and is expected to remain at this level until tomorrow, Holy Saturday. In their cars, intercity buses, ships and planes, Athenians leave the capital for the Easter holidays.

Today, on Good Friday, all the forces of Attica Traffic (Attica traffic police) are dedicated to regulating the flow of traffic. In the ports, in the morning one ferry route follows another. Good weather and high air temperatures have prompted many city residents to prefer island destinations.

Increased traffic on the Athens-Corinthos national highway. In particular, there are delays from the height of the Elefsina toll road to Agios Theodoros, as well as at Attiki Odos (from Aspropyrgos to Magula). Also, cars move at low speeds along Athens Avenue from the heights of the Haidari forest to the oil refineries. In contrast, on the Athens-Lamia national road, traffic is moving as normal, although there are slight delays at the toll booths on the highway to Afidnes.

The Traffic Department estimates that the exodus peaked during the morning hours of Friday 5/3 and will begin to subside later in the afternoon. Let us remind you that today, on Good Friday, the movement of trucks on the exit flow of roads of republican significance is also prohibited from 06:00 in the morning until 16:00 in the afternoon.

Because the bus occupancy rate reaches 100%, the departure of Athenians from the intercity stations of Kifisos and Lyosion is at its peak today. Buses follow routes to the regions of the Peloponnese, Aitoloacarnania, Epirus, Thessaly and Magnesia, Pierria, Evrytania, Phthiotis, Boeotia and Evia.

According to Sophocles Fatios, president of the Panhellenic Federation of Intercity Transport Drivers, traffic at both intercity bus stations is higher than last year and has actually increased by 20%.

250 routes are planned for today, of which 50 are emergency/additional, and 180 routes for Holy Saturday. The number of routes departing from intercity bus station in Lyosion (exceeds 100 per day) until Holy Saturday in all 11 directions: Evia, Phthiotis, Larissa, Magnesia, Karditsa, Trikala, Pieria, Phocis, Evrytania, Livadia, Thebes.

Traffic in Athens International Airport has also increased, with planes flying at very high occupancy rates on both domestic and international routes. On Good Friday, the number of flights (arrivals and departures) from El. Venizelos” numbered 537, of which 268 arrived and 269 departed. On Holy Saturday, the total number of flights will be 467, of which 238 arrivals and 229 departures, and on Easter Sunday a total of 437 flights, 217 arrivals and 220 departures are expected. On Easter Monday, May 6, the number of flights in El. Venizelos is 504 (250 arrivals and 254 departures), on Easter Tuesday there are 533 flights, with 265 arrivals and 268 departures, and on Wednesday 8 May 516 flights (261 arrivals and 255 departures).
