The 17th century stock exchange building in Copenhagen burned down (video)


A historic building, one of the oldest in Copenhagen, caught fire in the Danish capital. Its famous spire, engulfed in flames, collapsed.

The building, located next to Christiansborg Palace, where parliament meets, is a popular tourist attraction. Its characteristic spire, shaped like the tails of four dragons woven together, reached a height of 56 meters.

The first report of an open fire in Bersen appeared around 7.30 am local time. Later it became known that the 54-meter spire of the building had collapsed. At the time of the fire, restoration work was underway on the façade of the building. writes D.W. No casualties were reported. “400 years of Danish cultural heritage are engulfed in flames,” Danish Culture Minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt commented on the fire on his social media account X.

Huge clouds of smoke rose above the city center in the morning. People rushed inside the building, saving the most valuable artifacts, including paintings. Jacob Engel-Schmidt said it was “touching” to see passersby helping rescuers “rescue art treasures and iconic images from the burning building.”

The building was built in 1615 and housed the headquarters of the Danish Chamber of Commerce. Chamber Chairman Brian Mikkelsen also helped rescue paintings from the building. According to AFP, the cause of the fire is still unknown.
