The attack occurred during a sermon in church The Good Shepherd Church (Good Shepherd) in the Wakeley area, west of Sydney, on Monday afternoon (local time) when the bishop suddenly saw an unknown man with a knife approach him at the altar and stab him several times.
Parishioners immediately rushed to stop him, and, according to some reports, at least four people were injured, all priests. The criminal, whose motives have not been established, has been arrested; according to initial police reports, the priest's injuries are not life-threatening.
A photograph of the criminal at the time of his arrest was distributed by believers on the Internet. Rumor has it that his fingers were cut off! At the temple, clashes began with the police, who are trying to save the criminal from lynching.
