In the hall of the Criminal Court of Appeal of Thessaloniki, the incident that occurred in April 2019 in one of the cells on Mount Athos between two Russian-speaking monks was again considered.
A 70-year-old clergyman found himself in the dock after a 57-year-old monk complained that he beat him and took his laptop. Apparently, the incident occurred due to political differences: the accused accused his interlocutor of leading “political propaganda in favor of Russia”.
As a result, he was found guilty of theft (previously the charge was “robbery”), causing bodily harm and illegally carrying a weapon (he had a pocket knife), while he denied all charges. The court sentenced him to 12 months in prison, suspended for 3 years. The man appealed the decision and was released.
The applicant did not appear in court and reportedly left Mount Athos.
