Bulgaria and Romania officially join the Schengen area today (video)

Two European countries, Bulgaria and Romania, became part of the Schengen area. The truth is still partially true.

Relevant rules will apply to passengers traveling by air and sea. Both countries will also begin issuing their own Schengen visas on April 1, including to Russian citizens.

How clarifies euronews, passport control will remain in place for the time being when crossing the border at ground checkpoints. Austria exercised its veto on the issue and expressed concern about the ability of Sofia and Bucharest to combat illegal migration. Both countries, meanwhile, vowed to strengthen border controls and process asylum requests on their territories.

Bulgaria and Romania joined EU in 2007, and in 2011 the European Commission concluded that they were technically ready to join Schengen. But no political decision came until December 2023.
