Part of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the United States collapsed after a cargo ship collided with its support.
The Guardian reportsthat the incident occurred today, March 26. As a result of the collision, vehicles on the bridge fell into the water. The city's mayor said rescue efforts were continuing. The Maryland Transportation Authority said:
“All lanes are closed in both directions due to an incident on the I-695 Key Bridge. Traffic is being detoured.”
Rescuers were searching for at least seven people who were likely stranded in the water, Baltimore Fire Department communications director Kevin Cartwright said. He said agencies received multiple calls around 1:30 a.m. reporting a ship coming from Baltimore had struck a support and caused the bridge to collapse.
Coast Guard Baltimore Petty Officer First Class Matthew West told the New York Times that the 29-meter Singapore-flagged cargo ship crashed into a bridge that is part of Interstate 695. The Dali departed Baltimore at 1 a.m. and was headed to capital of Sri Lanka Colombo.
