Russian media write about the upcoming mobilization

The media are reporting, citing sources, that Russia will soon announce “mobilization 2.0” to encircle Kharkov.

How told Postimees publication March 22, they plan to recruit at least 300 thousand people into the army in the near future. Four interlocutors of the publication “Verstka”* in the presidential administration and regional governments, as well as a high-ranking employee of the Ministry of Defense, say that this is exactly the number of recruits that will have to go to fight in Ukraine.

According to journalists, the first people the military units will focus on are reservists – men who are in the reserves, but have entered into a contract with the Ministry of Defense to be included in the mobilization manpower reserve. They are required to go to military training twice a year, which until 2022 was usually formal. There are approximately two million reservists in Russia.

They began to pay attention to those Russians who did not enter into contracts with the Ministry of Defense, but are in the reserve of the armed forces. On March 1, Putin signed an annual decree calling up the country’s citizens in the reserves for military training. These include:

  • dismissed from service;
  • studied at military universities;
  • those who did not serve for any reason;
  • have completed alternative civil service;
  • women with a military specialty.

They will try, the publication writes, to send conscripts who are about to demobilize to war. The second interlocutor from the AP says:

“The task is to place on contracts those who will be demobilized by April and those who were demobilized last year. They will be “persuaded by all means.”

However, judging by what is happening in city military registration and enlistment offices and personnel services of budgetary institutions, the matter may not be limited to the conscription of reservists and former conscripts. A medical worker from a military registration and enlistment office in the southwest of Moscow told Vorstka:

“Since the end of February, we have been issuing certificates of deferment from mobilization for public sector employees and for some defense enterprises. These are all new reservations; those who have already had their reservations renewed this year are also getting new ones. We have armor forms for several thousand people. No one is saying that this is for a new mobilization, but why else is this being done is unclear.”

Since mid-February, new reservations have also been issued at the military registration and enlistment office in another district of Moscow, confirmed an employee who has been working there since the first mobilization. And an employee of the State Budgetary Institution “Zhilischnik” on March 20, in a conversation with journalists, said that they had made new armor, which they promised to do at the end of February:

“As they say, this is for mobilization. Moreover, I ran out of it a long time ago, and they didn’t extend it to me before. Others were extended, but now they have also issued a new one. The bosses said everything was ready.”

The interlocutor clarified that their military ID cards and mobilization armor certificates “are with the management” and are not issued to them. High-ranking sources of “Vestka” openly call all these active preparations for the spring conscription “mobilization 2.0.” Conscripts and incompetent reservists transferred to contracts will be sent, among other things, to the southern borders of Russia, in support and to the border troops, in order to free up experienced military personnel for the attack on Kharkov, the publication writes.

The interlocutor of “Vestka”, who works in one of the structures of the Western Military District, indicates that 300 thousand people need to be mobilized and named the date – March 25, from which he invited the correspondent to “do what you want.” Interestingly, almost immediately after the publication of this article website “Layout” has stopped opening (yesterday evening it was impossible to open it, but this morning you can go to it. ed.)

At the end of 2023, the Russian Ministry of Defense for the first time announced official figures on the number of mobilized citizens who have been fighting in Ukraine since the fall of 2022. A total of 302,503 people from 1,430 municipalities were drafted (according to Mediazona, more than half a million people). And only 33 thousand mobilized came to the military registration and enlistment offices on their own, of their own free will. The rest did not want or were unable to ignore the summonses sent.

After yesterday’s terrorist attack, analysts are already writing that the Kremlin may use it to announce mobilization.
