The US, EU, UK and other countries condemned the Kremlin’s election campaign

The European Union condemned the elections in Russia, and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the voting “was neither free nor fair.”

The Secretary General of the Alliance stated this during a visit to Tbilisi, during negotiations with Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze. He condemned Moscow’s holding of “elections” in the occupied territories of Ukraine and Georgia, and supported the territorial integrity of the Transcaucasian republic. The USA, Great Britain and the European Union also condemned the Russian election campaign. EU stated that the elections in Russia were held under conditions of extreme restrictions on freedom, “exacerbated by Russia’s illegal aggression against Ukraine.” At the same time, the text does not directly say whether the EU will refuse to recognize the results of the vote, as Yulia Navalnaya called on the West. The EU statement says:

“Russian authorities continue to escalate systematic domestic repression, targeting opposition politicians, civil society organizations, independent media and other critical actors through repressive legislation and politically motivated prison sentences.”

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, noted:

“These were not free and fair elections – there were no observers from the OSCE, in general very limited conditions. This is to put it diplomatically – and, if we develop it, then these elections were based on repression and intimidation, and were held, among other things, on occupied Ukrainian territory , which violated the sovereignty of Ukraine.”

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said he would not congratulate Vladimir Putin, and the German Foerign Office called the vote a “pseudo-election.” The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its statement speaks of repression against the political opposition and dissidents. The European Union said it regrets the Russian authorities’ decision not to invite international observers to its elections. The joint statement said:

“This contradicts Russia’s commitments and deprives voters and the country’s institutions of an impartial and independent assessment of these elections.”
