Cruise ship Sun Princess in the port of Piraeus

A solemn event took place in the port of Piraeus – the arrival of the ultra-modern cruise ship Sun Princess, which set off on its maiden voyage.

It was attended by the Deputy Managing Director of ΟΛΠ Α.Ε. Panagiotis Tsonis and the captain of the ship “Sun Princess» Craig Street.

Sun Princess has 10 scheduled sailings this season, 7 of which will be via the port of Piraeus. The first cruise started on February 28, 2024, departing from Civitavecchia (Rome), with calls at Naples, Santorini, Kusadasi, Piraeus, Messina, Mallorca, Barcelona. The newly built LNG-powered cruise ship is one of the largest ever built in Italy. With a length of 345 m, it can accommodate 4,300 passengers and 1,150 crew members on 21 decks, and also has 2,150 cabins.

As noted, in the port of Piraeus in 2023 there was increase in total number of cruise passengers by 68.6% compared to 2022. In total, approximately 1.5 million passengers and 760 cruise ships were served. Of the 760 liners, 75% had a home port of Piraeus. The number of passengers was 800,000, an increase of 110% compared to 2022.

For 2024, according to the plan, more than 1,000 cruise ships are expected to call at Greece (79% stopping at the port of Piraeus). Deputy Managing Director of ΟΛΠ Α.Ε. Panagiotis Tsonis expressed Great satisfaction with the remarkable development of the port of Piraeus and the high performance of the cruise sector. He stated that Piraeus is now a modern port with high quality services, which is increasingly trusted by leading cruise companies around the world, and which is predominantly chosen as a base and starting port for their trips.
