43 countries called for an international independent investigation into Navalny’s death


The countries of the European Union, Canada, Great Britain, the United States and other states demand that the Russian Federation ensure a thorough investigation into the “sudden and shocking” death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

Representative EU At international organizations in Geneva, Lotte Knudsen said on March 4 that Russian authorities must ensure the possibility of “an independent and transparent international investigation into his sudden death.” In her speech at the UN Human Rights Council, on behalf of 43 states, including the EU, USA, UK, Ukraine, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Norway, she placed primary responsibility for Navalny’s death on Russian President Vladimir Putin: ” We are outraged by the death of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, for which the main responsibility lies with President Putin and the Russian authorities.”

She expressed deep concern about the “systematic suppression of civil society,” as well as repression of political opposition within Russia and abroad.

Alexey Navalny, reminds DW, sentenced to a long term of imprisonment, died on February 16 in the special regime colony “Polar Wolf” in the village of Kharp in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The death report said the 47-year-old politician died of “natural causes.” Supporters believe he was killed. During his time in prison, Navalny was sent to a punishment cell 27 times.

Navalny’s funeral took place on March 1 in Moscow at the Borisov cemetery. Despite threats of detention, thousands of people came to say goodbye to the politician. A few days after the funeral, people line up at the politician’s grave to lay flowers and bid farewell to him.
