The 45-year-old father of an Old Believers (early Christians) family living in a hut in mountainous Corinthia has been released pending a new trial date of March 4, 2024.
A case was brought against him for violating the law on disobedience and on compulsory school attendance for children. Manos Kalaitzidakis said he was unable to contact his wife and minor children to find out where they were. He is reportedly in poor mental health due to his 15-year-old child, who is in custody undergoing treatment at a children’s hospital by order of the prosecutor.
Earlier on Wednesday, the head of the community submitted a document to the Corinth court claiming that he was suffering from a psychiatric illness with a disability rate of 67%, he asked to be examined by an expert, but his request was rejected.
“Brothers and sisters don’t listen when you turn your back on them, it only hurts them. When I turned my back, they became interested. They told me something about my daughter coming from boarding school. Society destroys you, and then asks you to change.”he said in front of the cameras, emphasizing that he would not undergo a DNA test for reasons of faith.
As he left, he said: “I’m doing society a favor by working, I could retire, I’ve been disabled for 15 years.” “The judge wanted the trial to take place today; I didn’t harm a single person.”he added.
