Mitsotakis: "The rule of law in Greece is stronger than ever"

“The rule of law in Greece is stronger than ever” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a joint statement with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola in Athens on Tuesday.

Just days after the adoption of an EP resolution expressing concern about the rule of law in the country, Mitsotakis hit out at those who question it.

“The only organization competent to judge Greece is the European Commission, which monitors the progress of each member state in matters of the rule of law,” – said the Prime Minister, adding that in “The Economist’s European Commission report included Greece among the 20 countries where the rule of law is the strongest in the world.”

“The dangers for Europe lie in other countries and they must be condemned in the European elections”,” Mitsotakis noted.

The Prime Minister noted that elections to the European Parliament will be held in four months and “Europe must have its own answers”. He said it was important for member countries to forge a common path, adding that voter participation would be a key factor in these developments. He also noted that the Greek government has introduced postal voting so that all citizens can take part in the electoral process.

For her part, Metsola praised the way the Greek government has dealt with the problems of recent years. She said that ahead of the European elections, “we can strengthen democracy even further through postal voting.” She also said they discussed the Middle East and Ukraine, and expressed support for the agricultural sector. “It’s important to deal with the situation, we don’t want anyone to fall behind.”she said, referring to farmers.

Speaking about the rule of law in Europe, she noted that it is important to treat all member countries equally and for this reason “We insisted on preparing a report on the rule of law for all member countries.”

According to Metsola, the goal was to openly discuss issues to avoid instrumentalization or turning the rule of law into a matter of party politics.

Metsola concluded by praising Greece’s adoption of the full marriage equality law and said the country has taken significant steps to promote equality and combat racism.
