Egyptian man who gunned down shipping company executives in Glyfada commits suicide

The Egyptian who shot the management of a shipping company was found dead in the basement of the shipping company building – he committed suicide with a shotgun found next to him.

The testimony of the employees of the shipping company in Glyfada is shocking.

It is significant that company employees describe the moment when a former employee entered the shipping company’s office and, according to them, attacked “boss”.

In particular, one of the employees said the following: “We were in our office and heard shots, we didn’t know what happened. This is a former employee of the company, an Egyptian by birth, who was fired long ago. Apparently, he wanted to take revenge on his superiors. He shouted for everyone to leave. He didn’t want to kill any of us. Only the bosses. That’s why he chose them. He shot and killed two supervisors and an employee who approached him in an attempt to calm him down. He came with a gun and a revolver. When he entered the company, he had no weapon visible, he was holding a bag in his hands. I was on my floor, hiding under the table until the police arrived and pulled us all out.”

Another company employee said: “I was on the first floor, and what happened was on the second. I heard the first two shots, went out onto the stairs and saw two guys coming down and said: ‘It’s Ares with a gun, and he’s shooting!’ I saw him enter the company because I was near the entrance. I know his car because we both have worked here for many years. I know he’s retired, but I don’t know if he was fired.”

An Egyptian gunman is found dead in the basement of a shipping company building, having killed himself with a shotgun. The attacker, called “Aris” by the Greeks but whose real name was El Burai, was a company employee who had been fired. According to the same information, he worked for many years as a watchman at the Carnesi family home in Petalios.

The offender entered the company’s premises from the parking lot because, despite being fired, he still had access to the premises. Upon entering the building, he said he was going to clean up.

He first went up to the mezzanine floor, where he shot one of the company’s executives and the owner’s son-in-law, and then went to the second floor, where he also shot the owner’s sister.

Egyptian man who gunned down shipping company executives in Glyfada commits suicide

European Navigation in Glyfada is the company that was broken into by the Egyptian gunman on Monday morning. He killed Maria Carnesi, the sister of the company owner Spyros Karnezis, his son-in-law and CEO Antonis Vlasakis (husband of Despina Carnesi), as well as one of the employees.

It is a company with almost half a century of presence in the Greek shipping industry and with a special focus on tankers. On its website, the company says it was founded in 1979 and has operated dozens of merchant ships, oil and chemical tankers over the decades, and “currently operates a fleet of approximately 1,200,000 dwt under European Product Carriers Ltd.”

In particular, it manages “two DP2 Suezmaxes tankers built in 2013 at STX (Korea), four LR2 tankers and eight MR tankers built in 2001-2005, three small tankers for the domestic Greek market built in 2004-2006 , and five more MR tankers were planned to be added to STX in Korea already in the last decade.”

The company’s facilities in Glyfada provide services for “technical management, operation, insurance and crew.”

According to some reports, the shipping company has recently been in the spotlight due to litigation in the Karnezis family over a number of financial issues. It is noted that the company’s founder, Spyros Karnezis, also has a controlling stake in a well-known fuel company.

Spyros Karnezis, although avoiding public appearances and unnecessary social events, invites maritime statesmen from Greece and abroad to enjoy the sun, sea and delicious aromas on his private island in Petalios. It’s no coincidence that powerful businessmen from all over the planet, such as Bill Gates and Mr. Amazon, are contacting each other to purchase their own island in the area.
