Greek merchant fleet: "Numbers of perfection" (video)


The impressive video was shown on February 7, during the second part of the annual general meeting of the Hellenic Shipowners Association.

The video describes in numbers the current picture of the state of the merchant fleet owned by Greece.

With the hashtag #PontoporosProtoporos, the video claims, among other things, that Greek shipowners control:

  • 20% of the world’s merchant fleet tonnage
  • 23% of LNG carriers
  • 30% of the world tanker fleet
  • 25% of the world’s dry cargo fleet.

The fleet owned by Greek shipowners includes:

  • 2602 bulk carriers (dry cargo carriers)
  • 507 tankers for transporting chemicals and products
  • 910 oil tankers
  • 147 LNG (liquefied natural gas) vessels
  • 163 vessels for transporting LPG (liquefied hydrocarbon gases, or liquefied petroleum gas)
  • 504 container ships
  • 229 general purpose vessels
  • 71 car carriers.

Greek shipping also maintains a leading position in Europe because it controls:

  • 60% of European shipping capacity
  • 75% of tankers controlled by the European Union
  • 80% of bulk carriers controlled EU
  • 82% of LNG carriers controlled by the EU.

Greek shipping is a pioneer as it ranks first in terms of fleet size operating on alternative fuels

  • 6.7% of Greece’s fleet is capable of running on LNG, compared to 5.3% of the world’s fleet
  • 2nd largest fleet equipped with SOx scrubber
  • 36% of new Greek-owned tankers to be delivered (order book) are equipped with sulfur oxide scrubbers, compared to 24% of the global fleet
  • 35% of Greece’s fleet is equipped with energy-saving technologies, compared to 23% of the world’s fleet.

Shipping and society are always together, The video shows some of the social contribution of Greek shipping:

  • 130+ million euros for the benefit of the Greek society (2013-2023)
  • 80+ million euros social contribution
  • 50+ million euros for the affected areas of Thessaly
  • 100+1 scholarship for the 2023-2024 academic year.
