Taxi union to begin 48-hour strike at end of February

Athens taxi drivers will begin a 48-hour strike on February 27-28, 2024, their union SATA announced on Wednesday. They call on their colleagues throughout Greece to join the action.

The decision was made at an emergency meeting of the administrative council on Wednesday, and this is the second such strike since the end of November 2023. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the union expressed its concern over the government’s economic policies, arguing that they are negatively impacting individual entrepreneurship in the country.

SATA calls on taxi drivers throughout Greece to join their strike. Among other things, taxi drivers demand:

  • Free travel on bus lanes for taxis with passengers.
  • Adjustments to the preset price for the route Athens Airport – City Center from 40 euros to 45 euros during the day and from 55 euros to 60 euros at night.
  • The constant VAT rate for taxi services is 13%.
  • Elimination of the mandatory registration of new zero-emission taxi vehicles only from 2026. SATA’s proposal is to move this commitment to 2035.
  • A clear and without gray areas separation of services provided by a taxi and a rented car with a driver.

“The government’s indifference to our demands is a casus belli”, – says SATA in a statement. During the strike, a general meeting of sector representatives is scheduled for February 28 at the Peristeri exhibition center in western Athens to bring the statute in line with the law. A protest rally and a march to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport are planned for the same dates.
