Metropolitan of Corfu Nektarios about the video with a disabled person: "It’s mounted"it’s fake"

Metropolitan Nektarios of Corfu has responded to accusations against him based on an edited video in which he allegedly makes a hand gesture asking a colleague to remove a young disabled man who is trying to approach him to receive a blessing.

In his statement he tells what really happened and publishes the full version of the video, which shows how a young disabled person holds his hand. The statement even suggests an attempt to discredit him because he has directly spoken out against the adoption of children by LGBTQ+ couples, which the government encourages.

The Archdiocese of Corfu claims that this is Fake news. providing a full video recording of the incident that occurred during Vespers in honor of St. Spyridon last December. In its response, the Metropolis notes that the full video recording shows the same young man kissing the hand of Metropolitan Nektarios a few minutes after the hierarch’s alleged refusal.

The video, which was uploaded with a disabled child, was filmed at vespers on the feast of St. Spyridon, Corfu, 12/11/2023.

At the same time, the Metropolis claims that the above video is not complete, since a few seconds after the Metropolitan’s assistant gestures to the young disabled person, he does the same to the altar boy, who, as the statement says, enters the sanctuary together with the disabled person.

“It is obvious that this practice is an attempt to discredit the Metropolitan for recently expressing negative views on the marriage of ‘same-sex couples,’” noted in the message of the Corfu Metropolitanate.

It is worth noting here that the “cut” of the video, with the help of which they tried to incriminate the Metropolitan of Corfu, was published Dimitris Alikakos, editor-in-chief of the website ellinikahoaxes.gr. It was this page that Facebook assigned the role of “imperial censor”, deciding which articles are true and which are fake news. This is the equivalent of a Coast Guard narcotics squad leader who ends up selling drugs himself*.

Full text of the statement of the Archdiocese of Corfu

In a report on a news website, which was circulated on various social networks, it was published that the Bishop of Corfu ordered the sending of a disabled child for allegedly not receiving his blessing during the celebration of Vespers on the feast of St. Spyridon on December 11, 2023.

The message is a classic example Fake news*. The young man in question is helping on the Holy Pilgrimage as reader and sacristan, as is customary in our Church, and what he was told is to go to the saint’s shrine to help, as is customary.

The video was posted in such a way as to create a false impression. If someone took the trouble to look through it in full, a little further (from points 6.13 to 6.15), they would see that a young man who is especially dear to both the metropolitan and the clergy, and who serves in all the churches of the old city (there is also the corresponding photographic material, which, however, respecting personal data, we do not publish, but it is available to everyone interested), enters the sanctuary, as required by church order.

At this moment he did not need to receive a blessing from the Metropolitan, nor did the other young man who follows him and also enters the sanctuary. They also did not receive a blessing from the metropolitan and the leadership of the city police, as can be clearly seen in the video, but they venerated St. Spyridon and went to the indicated place.

Obviously, this practice is an attempt to “repress” the Metropolitan for the views that he has recently expressed regarding the marriage of “same-sex couples.”
