The European Commission confirms the extension of duty-free imports for agricultural products from Ukraine, but is preparing an “emergency suspension” of their supplies to the market EU in case of excessive influx.
How writes edition “Country”, the EC proposes to introduce a protective mechanism for European farmers. EC Deputy Head Margaritis Schinas explains:
“Today the European Commission proposed to extend the suspension of import duties and quotas on Ukrainian exports to the EU for another year (until June 2025), while strengthening the protection of sensitive EU agricultural products. This is done in accordance with the EU’s commitment to support Ukraine for as long as necessary.”
For poultry products, eggs and sugar, a special emergency suspension mechanism is provided, which will be introduced if the volume of Ukrainian imports exceeds the 2022–2023 levels.
The unfavorable impact of the abolition of duties for Ukraine on the economies of a number of European Union member countries has been recognized. The new mechanism should therefore guarantee “the ability to take rapid remedial action in the event of significant disruptions in the EU market or in the markets of one or more Member States.”
In recent weeks across Europe farmers are protestingwhich, among other demands, call for the return of duties on Ukrainian products.
