Two people were killed and another missing when a boat carrying migrants crashed on the rocky coast of Lesvos due to gale force winds.
The shipwreck occurred in the Palios area of Mandamado, northeast of the islands of Lesvos, on the night of Monday to Tuesday January 30, the Greek coast guard said.
Due to strong winds blowing in the area with gusts up to force 9, the search and rescue operation could not be carried out at sea. On Tuesday morning, police discovered two bodies, as well as a total of 57 foreigners, who immediately took refuge in the surrounding hills after arriving.
They were on a plastic boat, on which they began their journey from the western coast of Turkey. According to survivors, one of the passengers fell into the sea when the boat hit the rocky shore and has been missing since then.
The rescued foreigners have been placed in a quarantine zone at the Kara Tepe Reception and Identification Center in Mytilene.
