Ukraine does not plan to extend the contract, which ends in 2024, for transporting Russian gas to Europe

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine denied the words of Robert Fico, Prime Minister of Slovakia, and stated that Ukraine does not intend to renew the contract for transporting Russian gas to Europe after 2024.

Message from the press service of the government of Ukraine quotes Interfax-Ukraine publication:

“The position of the Ukrainian side is clear: the contract for gas transportation expires at the end of this year, we do not intend to negotiate with the Russians and extend the contract, as the Prime Minister of Ukraine informed his Slovak counterpart.”

However, Kyiv “can talk to a European country (member EU) on the use of its gas transmission network.”

Earlier, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, after a meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal, said that Ukraine will be open to the transit of Russian gas next year.

Before this, Shmygal said that they signed a joint statement that should strengthen bilateral relations. At the same time, Bratislava will not block Ukraine’s purchase of weapons and equipment from Slovak businesses, which will also help with the construction of defensive lines. The Ukrainian Prime Minister noted: “Slovakia will support the Ukraine Facility program, which provides for the allocation of 50 billion euros to Ukraine by the European Union.”
