Killer of 2 stray cats sentenced to 8 years in prison

A 33-year-old man who killed stray cats was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment without reprieve, which is common practice in Greece regarding crimes against animals. In Greece, similar sentences are given for killing a person.

Accused of systematically killing cats in the Votanikos area of central Athens sentenced without the right to parole. The verdict concerns killing two animalsalthough there were complaints against him for torturing and killing more stray cats as the bodies of five more were found in his barn.

The man was arrested in February 2023 when a camera recorded his criminal activities. The footage prompted numerous complaints and responses from a section of high-ranking animal rights activists, leading to a zealous police investigation (thefts, muggings and murders were put aside. Cats are more important!).

Based on the investigation and evidence provided by animal welfare organizations, the man was identified and arrested. In court, the perpetrator reportedly did not answer the question of why he killed or beat stray animals. At first he claimed that it was not him in the video, but later retracted his words and stated that he only injured the animal, and that he and the cat were “just communicating.” This outraged the prosecutor so much that he proposed giving the criminal a life sentence, but the judge decided that 8 years of strict regime would be enough for him.

While most criminals who commit crimes against animals, which are considered criminal by law in Greece, are sentenced to suspended sentences and particularly large fines (30-50 thousand euros for each animal killed), this 33-year-old man became the second person to be sentenced to prison for torturing or killing an animal.

The first offender was Babis Anagnostopoulos, who in May 2021, in his home in Glyka Nea, eastern Attica, killed, in addition to his wife Caroline Crouch, their dog. I wonder what Anagnostopoulos received 10 years of strict regime for killing a dog, almost the same as for the murder of his wife.

PS With one hand the Greek state brutally punishes the killing of animals, with the other it imposes high taxes on pets, forcing owners to throw their pets into the street, dooming them to decline and death. This is not just cynicism, this is something that cannot be described in normal words.
